Various events and activities are taking place across the country next week leading up to Earth Day, making this week known as Earth Week.
Earth Day began in the United States on April 22, 1970 as a strategy to make concern for the environment a political priority. It became an international movement in 1990, when 141 countries, including Canada, joined to celebrate International Earth Day in an effort to raise awareness about environmental issues.
Today, Earth Day is celebrated in over 180 countries every year.
