My grandpappy always used to tell me to "go where your audience is." Okay, not really, but he should have! Because it's great advice.
Most nonprofits follow it well. They do paper mailings, send emails, create webpages, and attend public events. They're active on social media too - and most were smart enough to follow their audiences whem they switched from Myspace to Facebook.
But what about video? The latest research suggests that 50% of Internet users watch online video at least once a week, and video is responsible for 32% of all Internet traffic (with that figure expected to double by 2013). It's definitely time for nonprofits to follow their audiences to the video world.
"But video is hard," you whine.
True, video can be hard. But only if you want it to look good. Thankfully a video doesn't have to look good to be effective. Even a crappy video is oddly compelling when you know someone in it. And don't underestimate the power of a recommendation from a friend.
Plus, videos are easy to produce. You don't even need a real camera now that most smartphones and laptops have cameras built in. You can even record a video while on Facebook.
So don't be shy - make a crappy video for your next house party, birthday invitation or any other event. It'll take you five minutes, and it'll cut through the clutter and get your friends' attention.
For some inspiration, check out these awesome videos produced at the Impact! workshop. Each one was made in 15 minutes or less!
