In 1987, The United Nations defined sustainability as “meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”

Here’s how some of our participants defined sustainability in their conference applications…

Sustainability is the light at the end of the tunnel, the goal, the top of the mountain. We must find ways to continue working toward sustainability no matter how daunting or difficult a task it may be. – Lauren, Nova Scotia

I believe that through the development of the community, sustainable changes come naturally.- Eliese, Alberta

It means thinking about nature’s intrinsic value, instead of only profitable ones and finding a balance between the two.-Angeleen, British Columbia

Sustainability is learning that progression does not need to mean growth, but can mean creating a way to live- both locally and globally. –Alex, Manitoba

Education is the way to sustainability. –Briony, New Brunswick

Sustainability to me means that there will be a tomorrow.-Patrick, Newfoundland

There can not be sustainability without passion. – Emilie, Quebec

To me, sustainability is not an initiative, it is a way of life. –Joren, Saskatchewan
